PHOTO QUALITY:

We strive to deliver the finest quality vintage reprints on the web. These are the highest quality lab developed photos that we can commercially obtain from our fine digital files. But they are definitely NOT digital prints, or Pharmacy kiosk laminated digital prints "on Kodak (or whatever) paper".

Most of our scans were made from our own extensive photo collection, and lovingly retouched to repair defects in the vintage photo print, without altering the original image.

Why are there borders on my photo?

The originals of most images are vintage 3.5"x5.5" real photo or printing press printed postcards. The standard equivalent reprint size of 4"x6" is a different proportion/format. We sometimes add borders on 2 or 4 sides to prevent image loss when the print is cropped to size. Have always hated to see fingers, toes, hands, feet etc. lopped off a reprint when they were present in the original. Sometimes these borders do not display clearly on the webpage.

So why are some photos sharper than others?

There is significant variation in image quality and sharpness in the reprints, and here is why: 1) Quality is completely constrained by the quality of both the original photographer or artist's image, as well as the quality and printing method of the vintage postcard or photo used. Some vintage photographers used soft-focus as an element of their style. These cannot be effectively sharpened. 2) The 4x6 format is an enlargement from 3.5x5.5 originals. For press printed images this is not an asset, but usually exhibits no visible image degradation. For photographically printed ones, the enlargement may reveal detail that cannot be seen in the original. This type also allows more latitude for retouching, sharpening and other enhancing adjustments, often resulting in a much stronger rendering of the original shot without sacrificing any of its inherent character. Most of these adjustment are done with the press-printed ones too, but sharpening is usually not possible. Either way, the repro virtually always looks BETTER than the original. All in all we are really happy with the fidelity and quality of these reprints.

BA-RA-KA

FYI: "Baraka" is an auspicious Berber and/or Arabic term (Morocco, North Africa) with a meaning of blessing, empowerment, good fortune, protection, etc. "BA-RA-KA" breaks it down into the ancient Egyptian root words for the concepts of soul, sun-god and shadow (roughly equivalent to the three hidden aspects of the human self in Huna & other philosophies).
